A short hike to Mount Defiance in Oregon is from Wahtum Lake Road and is about 3.6 miles roundtrip with 1140 ft gain. From Dee near Hood River, it's about a 10-mile drive on FR 2820 to the Upper Mount Defiance trailhead.

The first part of the trail is mostly forested with very little gain. Along the way you'll see Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens peeking through the trees. The last third of the trail is more exposed. Watch your step when the trail climbs a rocky scree. There are radio towers at the top, but those don't get in the way of the amazing view of Mt Hood. KK7DS and I set up 20m and 40m end-fed halfwave antennas in a flat spot in the trees.
