Johnson Mountain is a 2 point summit near Powers, OR in the Rogue/Siskiyou National Forest. This site is the presumed location of a famous meteorite hoax detailed here. Due to a closure of Johnson Mountain Road out of Powers, we were advised to head south to China Flat campground which is a good route (detailed below).

This summit could be combined with Barklow Mountain without too much additional driving. The mainline roads in this area are in decent shape, servicable in a passenger car. Nearly all the spur roads are in bad condition and require high clearance or are impassible. However, the spur road for Johnson was in pretty decent shape.

From Powers:

  • From Powers, head south on Powers Road South. This road turns into FR 33 after about 4 miles. Drive 10.9 miles to China Flat Campground at (42.77922, -124.06397).
  • Turn right on 3353 and continue across the bridge 0.3 miles to (42.77850, -124.06900).
  • Turn right onto the 010 spur and head uphill for 4.0 miles until (42.81390, -124.08562).
  • Take the sharp left here and proceed on 3363 for 0.8 miles to (42.80527, -124.08266).
  • Take the spur road on the right. Mid clearance recommended here due to water bars. Continue 0.9 miles and park at (42.80116, -124.09581).
  • You are in the AZ. Continue to the summit area, as required.

You may be able to work a few people up here on 146.52. I wouldn't expect much on 58.

NOTE that black bears are very active in this region. We saw a very large black bear and multiple fresh scat during our trip, so use proper precautions.
