This activation begins by getting to the Joaquin Miller Trail Head off of US-395 south of John Day Oregon. Interestingly Google Maps shows this trailhead and the roads to it, but does not provide driving directions to it. My Garmin road GPS did get us there and the driving directions are on the FS website here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/malheur/recreation/hunting/recarea/?recid=39958&actid=54 . Road is passable in the carefully driven passenger car.

The hike is short if a bit steep. It proceeds up the ATV trail to a saddle. Then a bushwack through a burned forest to the summit itself. I would recommend doing this one sooner rather than later as the brush is not bad now, but the with the burned trees not shading it, it will grow.

The hike is 1.5 miles round trip with 400ft of elevation gain. Less than a ¼ mile is on trail.
