SOTA Activities

I am new to SOTA and have not activated any peaks or chased any peaks. Mater of fact, I made my first HF contact in December 2018 nearly 18 months after getting my general ticket. I am getting a new SOTABeam antenna and pole for doing HF work and a Bioenno battery, solar panel and solar controller for log stents on the hills. I find that my 817 chargeable battery sucks even after purchasing a new one. There are so many peaks to activate within 5 miles of my house and I am thinking of starting with those and others in south Central Oregon where i own another piece of property near Crescent Lake.

I received my technician license less than a few years ago and actually went on and punched my general ticket soon after and I am studying to get my Extra Class in the first week of January 2019. I have a FT 817ND QRP rig and starting to accumulate better antennas and solar power for SOTA activation.

I live in the Hoodland area, located on the Western slopes of Mt. Hood in Welches, the elevation here is about 1100 feet. The nice thing about living here is that we are surrounded on two sides with wilderness areas (Mt. Hood and Salmon Huckleberry) with many trails to explore.

I have been trying to find my own niche to amateur radio since I received my license. I am interested in SOTA as this is a great idea since there are many summits in our local area and it helps keep me in shape by hiking the trails. Another interest is doing some sort of DXpedition, This is do to me being a Paramedic and I think my medical skills could be useful in a remote setting, plus I love travel and world geography. I have toyed with the idea of ARES since I work for a fire station, but it may be a conflict of interest with my job. The other thing that peaks my interest is soldering up my own little QRP radio.
