SOTA Activities

I like to challenge myself and really like the adventure of an overnight hike to a summit. Although I'm not a Mountaineer, I will spend 2 - 3 days on the trail to get to an unactivated summit and enjoy the solitude of a remote location and the satisfaction of activating an unactivated summit. I don't re-visit summits. It's not about the points for me. It's about the journey and setting personal objectives. I've always used a PackTenna random wire for HF and my favorite VHF/UHF antenna is the 450 ohm SlimJim roll-up by N4TAX - awesome antenna! I will rarely use the Elk LOg Periodic if I'm up to lugging it around but I try to keep my pack light and my gear simple. My transciever is the venerable FT-817. I don't know of a portable radio with a better receive on it. QRP only - no amps. Modes = SSB/CW

Bio

Licensed Operator since 2013 and started operating QRP portable in 2014. Started my bushcrafting and hiking career on family hikes from an early age and later in high school and college would go with my buddies into the Serrias for week-long hikes. I also would spend Summers and Winters in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado with my mother's family and ski, snowshoe, and hike in the Sangre de Christo mountains and the Rockies as well. The only thing that matches my love of our beautiful wildlands is my love for Amateur Radio... it seems that SOTA is a perfect fit and I live for the new adventures that the PNW has to offer. I'm also a licensed Commercial Pilot and watercolor artist.
