Elk Mountain, WA - July 2020

Summit:
W7W/NO-035

Elk Mountain is in the Olympic National Park and accessible from a well-maintained forest service road named Obstruction Point Road. The road is not open all year, so check park conditions before you go. The summit is attainable by taking the Obstruction Point Trail and then making the easy traverse up to the base of a large rock formation. A quick stairstep up the rocks brings you to the summit. Total hike from parking to summit is about 1.5 miles.

Summit 5645(Hurricane Ridge) - July 2020

Summit:
W7W/NO-091

Summit 5645 (Hurricane Ridge) is in the Olympic National Park and accessible from a well-maintained forest service road named Obstruction Point Road. The road is not open all year, so check park conditions before you go.  There is no established trail to this SOTA summit, but it is quite straightforward to follow the ridgeline to the summit and does not require bushwhacking.

Monte Cristo HP | June 2020 (Updated Info)

Summit:
W7W/MC-056

I referenced K7ATN's blog post from a couple years ago and found some revised signage, new road clearing efforts and noted some additional GPS turn coordinates.  Here is an updated trip report for Monte Cristo HP in the Trout Lake area of WA. And here's the previous trip report: http://www.pnwsota.org/blog/k7atn/2018-november-16/monte-cristo-hp-wa-nov-2018.

Wahatis Peak, WA | Nov 2019

Summit:
W7W/CW-099

Whatatis Peak is directly North of the Hanford Reach National Monument. From Richland WA to the summit is just over 61 miles. You can drive very close to the summit, only the last little 1/4 mile kick up to the top peak is really treacherous. There is good parking at serveral locations off the access road to pull over to complete the summit on foot. I did a 2.5 mile hike to the top.

Yellow Jacket Bench, OR | November 2019

Summit:
W7O/NE-106

Yellow Jacket Bench is located in the Umatilla National Forest. It can be a drive up summit, or there are places off the final access road NF-40 that you can pull off so you can make the final ascent on foot.  It is 30 miles from Walla Walla community college.

Pikes Peak Bench, OR | Nov 2019 - No Access

Summit:
W7O/NE-154

Both myself and KJ7IEG made separate attempts at Pikes Peak Bench. This SOTA summit is outside of the Umatilla Forest boundary. I attempted to access it from the Umatilla Forest via NF-6511 from the East and ran into closed access roads, fencing and No Tresspassing signage. KJ7IEG attempted it from the SW from Mormon Grade Rd and encountered same.  The area is adjacent to high ATV and hunting traffic so we suspect that the private land owners got fed up with things.

Summit 5230, OR | Oct 2019

Summit:
W7O/NE-236

Summit 5230 is located 23 miles (as the crow flies) South of Pendleton, OR.  If you have the right vehicle and can tolerate a long bumpy ride in, this can be a drive up summit.  It would make an excellent mountain bike-based activation. I would not attempt this summit without a GPS.

Tower Mountain, OR | September 2019

Summit:
W7O/NE-058

Tower Mountain really does have a tower on it. The 92'-tall Aermotor steel lookout tower was built in 1935. It is still standing and accessible today. Your level of enjoyment with the activation will likely increase if you are able to use the tower in your activation. This peak is the highest and most prominent point in Umatilla County, Oregon, but the summit is tree lined so getting up the tower gets you above the trees.

Milk Shakes West, OR | September 2019

Summit:
W7O/NE-093

If you want to practice being a mountain goat, this is the summit for you. This peak is technically in NE Oregon, but you drive there from Eastern Washington. The access road near the summit is better suited for high clearance vehicles and has space for 1 car to park. From there you will need to traverse to the summit without a trail up some very steep terrain. You can navigate around the treed sections easily, so although it is very steep with delicate footing, you won’t have to bushwhack.

My First SOTA point

Summit:
W7O/WV-095

It was great to meet club members at SEA-PAC.  I came back motivated to earn my first point! WV-095 (https://www.sota.org.uk/Summit/W7O/WV-095) is Mt Scott and has been frequently activated. It looked pretty straightforward and I had already cycled to the top a few years ago.
