"Capacitor Peak" Activation 6/3/2016

Summit:
W7W/LC-071

The easy access to this hill is off of forest road FS-6081 (you’d want a high clearance vehicle) which was not passable for us. It leads to a spur road that goes almost to the top (this is also blocked to vehicles by windfall and some erosion). Good thing we had a plan B – which was to follow the PCT - Trail #2000, south from the nearby Crest Horse Camp.

Marble Mtn

Summit:
W7W/LC-075

Park at the Marple Mountain Sno Park overflow area which is on the south side of SR83. Plenty of parking room in the non-snow months.

Follow FR8312 to the summit which is about 4 mi one way.  Easy hike up an old logging road.  The summit is a site of an old firetower but is now used as a USGS Mt St Helens monitoring site.  Enough room at the summit for an EFHW.  Good vistas of Mt Adams but St Helens is obscured by the forrested summit.

W7W/LC-052

Park at the open gate where FR54 and FR5407 cross which is just west of the Trapper Creek Wilderness area.  The TH is just across from the parking area where the Wilderness Permit box is located.

Activating Elizabeth Ridge in Mt. Rainier National Park

Summit:
W7W/RS-049

I've had my eye on Elizabeth Ridge since first noticing it two years ago during an activation of nearby Tolmie Peak (W7W/RS-035). This 5,500' summit rises sharply just across the road from the trail head one takes to Tolmie Peak. Starting at the road in front of Mowich Lake, the summit is only 500' vertically, but this is over a distance of 0.3 to 0.4 miles. This could be a short (but not necessarily quick and easy) hike during the summer after doing Tolmie Peak. A winter or spring activation adds 4.5 miles (each way) and 1200' of elevation because the road is closed and snow covered.

Wind Mountain, WA | August 2015

Summit:
W7W/LC-146

Wind Mountain is a great hike with fantastic views near Hood River Oregon.  It is on the Washington State side of the river so your will need to cross the toll bridge to the Washington side if you are coming from Hood River, OR.

The toll is $1 I think and is well worth the price of admission for Wind Mountain.  You will pass the parking for Dog Mtn on the way to Wind Mtn if coming from Hood River.  Dog Mtn is another popular hike to a SOTA summit.

Peak 4700, Idaho | April 2016

Summit:
W7I/BC-095

This was the first activation of "Peak 4700" off Hwy21 on the way to Idaho City from Boise.  The peak rises right from the hwy, but access is from the opposite (South) side.  This was my second attempt at the peak as an impromptu mountain bike attempt late in 2015 was thwarted by snow.

First SOTA Activation: Lookout Mountain, Kittitas County, Washington - March 25, 2016

Summit:
W7W/CW-092

First SOTA Activation of Lookout Mountain, a smallish, somewhat obscure SOTA peak, above the town of Cle Elum.  Lookout Mountain is 3,465 Feet in elevation (1,056 Meters), which makes it feasible even in winter, when the high country is still buried in snow.  This Lookout Mountain is NOT to be confused with Lookout Mountain (W7W/CW-037).  This joint Activation, together with my SOTA Buddy, Tim, KG7EJT, took quite a bit of reserach and planning to achieve.  The easy / old way to reach the summit was from the South.  However, over the last decade or so, the entire southern exposure of Lookout Mountain has changed hands in ownership, and is now a "gated" community of large land parcels & homes. This necessitated a cross country brush beat to summit from the North.

SOTA Activation: Occidental Peak, Los Angeles County, California - January 29, 2016

Summit:
W6/CT-098

On midwinter trip to Southern California to visit family, once again we set aside time for several SOTA Activations.  This report details the Activation of Occidental Peak, very close to the famous Mount Wilson Observatory.  I has previously Activated the adjacent San Gabriel Peak, and had observed Occidental close by.

Round Top, OR | March 2016

Summit:

Here's an activation on the way to the coast. There's a short hike of about 1.2 miles RT and 400 feet of gain. A GPS will be Very Handy to get you to the summit.

Strawberry Butte - Drive-up or hike/bike/ski - near Helena (2014 activation)

Summit:
W7M/HB-128

This is a drive-up to an old USFS fire lookout that should be accessible to most vehicles, although the road is somewhat rutted.  There is a picnic table located on the spacious, forested summit that makes for a comfortable operating position.  The road is closed to vehicles fr
